Welcome to my corner of the internet

I am a sociolinguist and PhD candiate

Hi there! I'm Tom, a sociolinguist and PhD candidate researching the acquisition of sociolinguistic variation in Britain’s Black Country. My work focuses on how children in bidialectal communities learn to become competent users of their regional dialect as well as 'standard' English. In order to do this, I also investigate the features of the unique Black Country dialect.

Welcome to the Black Country

The Black Country is an urban, industrialised region in the west Midlands of England, contiguous with the city of Birmingham.

I grew up in the Black Country, and its unique dialect is the focus of much of my research.
