I am a sociolinguist and PhD candidate
Hi there! I'm Tom, a sociolinguist and PhD candidate researching the acquisition of sociolinguistic variation in Britain’s Black Country. My work focuses on how children in the Black Country learn to use and vary the features of their dialect, and the role that acquisition plays in the persistence of stigmatised regional varieties. In order to do this, I also investigate the features of the unique Black Country dialect.
The Black Country is an urban, industrialised region in the west Midlands of England, contiguous with the city of Birmingham.
I grew up in the Black Country, and its unique dialect is the focus of much of my research.
In 2022 I completed an MRes in Linguistics at Queen Mary in East London, where I am now pursuing a PhD.
In 2020 I graduated from the University of Southampton with an integrated masters (MLang Hons) in French and Linguistics
My PhD studentship is funded by LISS-DTP.
The radio station Black Country Radio is my PhD project partner.
